The Girl Before the Tides begins on the Southern Oregon coast, where some of my earliest memories were shaped by rivers, forests, family, and the places I once called home.
What began as an attempt to write down those childhood memories grew into something much larger—a series following the people, places, losses, laughter, and unexpected turns that shaped the life that came afterward.

Before the tides carried her anywhere else, there was Oregon.
The Girl Before the Tides: Volume One follows Katie through the earliest years of her childhood, beginning among the rivers, forests, and rugged coastline of Southern Oregon. Told through the memories of the little girl who lived them, ordinary childhood moments unfold alongside the people, places, laughter, losses, and experiences that would remain with her long after she left.
From the Elk River Fish Hatchery to the beaches of Port Orford, Volume One returns to the places where my earliest memories began.
It is a story filled with moments I didn’t know would matter.

A LITTLE REVENGE
“Now it’s my turn to be the robber!” I cried fighting back tears of frustration. This game was no longer fun anymore. I wanted my money back and the only way to retrieve it was to be the robber.
He laughed, “I’m done playing, I want to go play duck hunt.”
I was absolutely crushed. Why does he do this to me!? I went into my room and slammed my door as hard as I could, screaming at the top of my lungs, “I HATE YOU!” Then I threw that stupid pink safe across the room as hard as my little arm would allow. It crashed hard into my pile of Barbies and accessories went flying around the room.
I sat on the floor and cried giant alligator tears. How come he got away with stealing my money every time? It was never fair.
In that moment, I decided I wasn’t going to let him do this to me anymore. I made a plan and I was going to execute it with precision.

Volume One is taking shape
The Girl Before the Tides: Volume One is still in the writing stage. The story is taking shape chapter by chapter, and I’m continuing to add the memories that belong between them.
Some scenes arrive almost exactly as I remember them. Others begin with one tiny detail—a room, a road, something someone said—and slowly bring the rest of the memory back with them.
